Notes: Wishbone Ash: Andy Powell (vocals, acoustic guitar, mandolin); Mark Birch (vocals, acoustic guitar); Morwena Lasko, Lewis Gibson (violin); Giles Hedley (harmonica); Mick Parker (accordion); Paul Moran (piano, Hammond organ); Bob Skeat (bass, background vocals); Ray Weston (drums); Glen LeFleur, Ansley Powell (percussion); Claire Hamill (background vocals). This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other. Folk music always played a part in Wishbone Ash's unique style, along with blues, rock & roll, and Yes-style prog-rock riffs, but long time fans might be a little surprised by this set. It's Wishbone Ash unplugged, with nary an electric guitar on hand until the closing "Everybody Needs a Friend," to which founding member Andy Powell contributes some dazzling solos. The songs mostly have a strong Celtic flavor, with the exception of an occasional blues-based tune like "Love Abuse," which features fetching background vocals by undervalued British singer-songwriter Claire Hamill. Some of the songs here, such as "Wings of Desire" and "Errors of My Way," date back to the band's original early-1970s incarnation.
With their trademark twin-guitar sound and mix of hard-rock edge and prog-rock adventurousness, Wishbone Ash were one of the definitive British heavy-guitar bands of the 1970s. The early '70s were their period of greatest acclaim, but even after original guitarist/singer Ted Turner left in 1974, Wishbone Ash forged ahead with continued success for some time, moving their operations to the U.S. for a few years. Though they went through a dizzying array of lineups and styles over the course of their career, the band never really broke up, continuing to record and tour for decades.
