Dig a Little Deeper
To listen to sound clips, you'll need the most current version of the
Performer: The Jordanaires
Distributor: Madacy Distribution Notes: Includes bonus DVD. After providing oohs and aahs for almost every country star in the genre's galaxy (and Elvis too), the Jordanaires are as synonymous with the enveloping slickness of the Nashville Sound as Chet Atkins himself. So while the Christian quartet tackling bluegrass (a genre not particularly known for its smoothness), as on BELIEVE: A COLLECTION OF BLUEGRASS HYMNS, may seem surprising at first, they do so with the pleasant harmonics that made them the industry standard. The highlights are many: "Dig A Little Deeper," a favorite of Elvis; "Angel Band," a bluegrass standard tailor-made for the Jordanaires' heavenly airs; and "Just a Closer Walk with Thee," a revisitation of the 1950 Red Foley hit which featured the group. The string-picking accompanient across the two discs, while competent and at times impressive, never overshadows the real draw.
Perhaps best known as Elvis Presley's backing singers from the 1950s through the mid-'60s, this vocal quartet had a robust career of their own. Like many country/gospel artists of the era, they got their first big break on the Grand Ole Opry and Louisiana Hayride programs in the late '40s, and recorded several albums of spine-tingling inspirational music. They have also backed many other country stars, such as Johnny Cash and Jim Reeves. Although their lineup has changed several times since their inception, the group continues to record and perform their uplifting four-part harmony, treating audiences to a precious musical tradition that is fast becoming an anomaly.
