Notes: Package includes DVD. Given hip-hop's overwhelming popularity, it's no surprise that there would be a significant Spanish-language arm of rap. In the 1990s, Hispanic artists Cypress Hill and Fat Joe released successful versions of their records in Spanish, and Mellow Man Ace scored a crossover hit with the "Spanglish" tune "Mentirosa." However, it was in the early 2000s that Spanish-language rap truly exploded, led by the South Central Los Angeles duo Akwid and fellow Angelinos Crooked Stilo. The second volume of EL MOVIMIENTO DE HIP HOP EN ESPANOL captures this eruption with a solid cross-section of prominent artists. Akwid leads off the collection with the thought-provoking "Jamas Imagine," and the festivities are underway. Like Akwid, Crooked Stilo also offers up two tracks, as do tough MC Azteka and the female rapper Flakiss. EL MOVIMIENTO also touches on the R&B side of Latin rap with singer Yolanda Perez. Overall, EL MOVIMIENTO DE HIP HOP EN ESPANOL VOL. 2 offers a solid impression of the future of Latino hip-hop.
