Notes: HALL OF FAME: A TRIBUTE TO BOB MARLEY'S 50TH ANNIVERSARY is a compilation of Bunny Wailer's covers of Bob Marley songs. Personnel: Bunny Wailer (vocals, keyboards, percussion); Dwight Pinkney, Winston "Bo Peep" Bowen, Junior Marvin, Owen Reid, Gitsy Willis (guitar); Johnny Moore, Bobby Ellis, Everton Gayle, Barrington Bailey (horns); Keith Sterling, Mallory Williams, Lloyd "Obeah" Denton, Christopher Birch, Leroy Romnace, Toney Johnson (keyboards); Robbie Shakespeare, Daniel Thompson, Michael Fletcher, Aston Barrett, Errol "Flabba" Holt (bass); Carl Ayton, Sly Dunbar, Mikey "Boo" Richards, Style Scott, Hugh Malcolm (drums). Includes liner notes by Bunny Wailer. HALL OF FAME won the 1997 Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album. Although nowhere near as essential as the original recordings, this impressive two-CD set finds the last living member of reggae's great songwriting triumvirate (the other being Peter Tosh) paying tribute to longtime bandmate Bob Marley with 52 roots reggae classics written by the former Wailers frontman. Almost all of his finest tunes are reverently covered here, including classics like "Roots Rock Reggae," "Zion Train," "One Love," and "Simmer Down." Performed by an outstanding cast of musicians, including reggae legends like Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare, the music stays remarkably true to the originals, leaving Bunny Wailer to the task of paying homage to his late, great friend. Fortunately, he proves up to the challenge, making this a great set for reggae collectors. ~ Bret Love Bunny Wailer's name will forever be tied with Bob Marley's, possibly even more so than the third member of the original Wailers, Peter Tosh, both because of his assumed name and because he's spent much of his solo career, particularly since Marley and Tosh's deaths, as the band's semi-official caretaker, devoting many of his solo albums, such as TIME WILL TELL and THE NEVERENDING WAILERS, to thoughtful, non-exploitative remembrances of and tributes to his late bandmates. The two-disc, 52-track 1995 release HALL OF FAME combines remixed versions of old Wailers material with new recordings by Wailer and many of the musicians who made the original Wailers records so powerful, including the underrated guitar Junior Marvin, whose fluid yet rhythmic playing is the album's secret weapon. A sincere, loving, and completely captivating collection, HALL OF FAME is a tribute worthy of the man who inspired it.
In the seminal reggae band the Wailers, his clear, ringing tenor made him the perfect high-harmony foil for childhood friends Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, but Bunny Wailer also contributed a number of powerhouse lead vocals and songs to the group. After several years of recording and touring successfully with the band, Wailer left in 1974 to pursue a solo career. He hit the ground running in '76 with BLACKHEART MAN, a now-classic collection of rousing roots anthems, and continued to release albums to acclaim over the next two decades. His recording and touring career have been hampered somewhat by a reluctance to leave Jamaica, but the artist commands the respect of long-time fans based on his history and contribution to the reggae canon.
