Performer: Louis Jordan
Distributor: E1 Distribution (USA) Notes: Louis Jordan's use of uptempo jump shuffle rhythms and his jivin' persona and loose, almost calypso approach created a template for R&B and eventually for rock & roll and even hip-hop, and his boundless good energy informed jazz, as well. This two-disc, 44-rack collection hits the essential high points of Jordan's career, and while it may be a bit too much for the casual listener, more serious listeners will find it just about right. ~ Steve Leggett
Uncut (p.119) - 4 stars out of 5 - "A unique concoction of swing-into-bop boogie which anticipated rock'n'roll..."
The most successful and influential purveyor of saxophone-driven jump blues, Louis Jordan was also one of the crucial transitional figures between the swing era and R&B. Although he started out mainly as a saxophonist with bandleaders such as Bessie Smith, Chick Webb, and Louis Armstrong, he found a niche singing blues and novelty tunes. After a string of hits throughout the 1940s, Jordan eventually found himself outpaced by the very rock & roll he had helped inspire.
