Notes: In an effort to make jazz more accessible to a younger audience, the revered Verve label dug into its archives and recruited DJs to add electronic grooves to vintage tracks by legendary artists (Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, and others). While the VERVE REMIXED series presents the results of these experiments, its companion series, VERVE UNMIXED, allows listeners to hear the original source recordings. Songs such as "Come Dance with Me" by Shirley Horn and "Sing, Sing, Sing" by Anita O'Day are top-notch swingers, while moody ballads by Billie Holiday ("Speak Low" and "Yesterdays") and Nina Simone ("Little Girl Blue" and "Lilac Wine") explore the darker recesses of the heart. One can almost hear the remix possibilities on Sarah Vaughan's funky "Fever" and Dinah Washington's dreamy "Baby, Did You Hear?" However, these songs sound terrific as is, and maintain their own charm and magnetism. A special mention should be given to Jimmy Smith's ultra-funky dance piece, "Stay Loose," a fierce, deep-pocketed groove tune.
