Brad Johnson is originally from The Geto Boys, the rap trio who put Houston on the map. In this dark and brooding collection, written as a very personal diary, over the course of 15 tracks Johnson sets the record straight. The title track takes us from the rapper's conception to his emergence from the womb, relating how he's the last of his truly tormented kind, while in "Look Into My Eyes" he admits the horrible truths of his past and laments that people can't look past that and move on. "Down With Us" lets his influence in the music industry be known, while "O.G. 2 Me" runs down the real meaning of Original Gangster. "Conspiracy Theory" tells of a Mafia set up gone wrong, the informer caught and brought to justice, Houston style. In "My Time" Johnson knows he's running out of time and considers a born again lifestyle--whether he achieves redemption or not, with LAST OF A DYING BREED he's made a compelling album.
Vibe (11/00, pp.159-60) - 3 discs out of 5 - "...This is what hardcore is wearing this season....the material succeeds on the strength of [his] skull-crushing delivery and lyricism..."
4.5 stars out of 5 - "...A solid effort throughout....exposing and exploring the reality of ghetto life with street-inspired poetry....and dope beats aside, it's Face's lyrics and angst-filled agressive flow that makes [this] a compelling record..."
A member of famed Houston gangsta rap group the Geto Boys, Scarface is one of the most respected southern MCs of all time. As a solo artist, he is by far the most successful member of the Geto Boys and is often credited with bringing southern hip-hop, and the Houston scene in particular, out of the underground and into the mainstream. In the early 2000s, Scarface claimed that he was retiring from the solo MC game, but stated that he would continue to work with the Geto Boys and record and produce for other artists.
