Notes: The Feminine Complex was an all-female rock band from Nashville. This is a reisue of the band's only album, which was recorded with studio musicians, along with 11 previously-unreleased outtakes and demos featuring just the band. The Feminine Complex: Mindy Dalton (guitar, vocals); Pame Stephens (organ, vocals); Jean Williams (bass, vocals); Lana Napier (drums, vocals); Judi Griffith (tambourine, vocals). Reissue producer: Jonathan Marx. Recorded at Woodland Street Studios, Nashville, Tennessee in 1968. Originally released on Athena Records (6001). Includes liner notes by Jonathan Marx. This reemastered release of a 1969 album from the Nashville-based all-female garage band The Feminine Complex includes bonus tracks, new liner notes, and rare photos of the band. Tracks include "Hide & Seek", "Now I Need You", "Are You Lonesome Like Me?, and 19 more. If you've heard vague rumors about this album and expect it to be a garage punk masterpiece, you might be somewhat disappointed. The group's 1969 debut LP, Livin' Love, is not a collection of gritty, raw garage rock with snarling vocals and plenty of attitude; instead, it's a slick, over-produced, and generally mellow album featuring session musicians and an overall sound that's closer to Dusty Springfield than to the Sonics or Chocolate Watchband. Fortunately, the vocals are relatively strong, the songs aren't bad, and the reissues on Rev-Ola and Teenbeat contain several bonus tracks (including some demos that showcase the band without the studio gloss). The album also provides some entertaining '60s details, such as the wah-wah guitar and repeated phrase "can you find yourself" on "Hide & Seek," which help give the music some personality. ~ Todd Kristel
Uncut (p.125) - 5 stars out of 5 - "[M]ulti-layered, deceptively innocent, largely self-penned psychedelic pop that swings from exuberant to spooky via forlorn and sentimental. Unintentionally groundbreaking."
