Notes: Synergy: Larry Fast. Recorded at House Of Music and Synergy Studio, West Orange, New Jersey from January 2-June 1, 1981. Originally released on Passport (6005). All tracks have been digitally remastered from the original master tapes by Larry Fast. Liner Note Author: Larry Fast. Recording information: House Of Music, West Orange, NJ (01/02/1981-06/01/1981); Synergy Studio (01/02/1981-06/01/1981). Under the name of Synergy, synthesizer whiz Larry Fast made a series of albums in the '70s and early '80s that redefined the meeting place between rock and electronic music. This 1981 album was the culmination of a process that began with such '70s Synergy recordings as SEQUENCER and ELECTRONIC REALIZATIONS FOR ROCK ORCHESTRA. On AUDION, regarded by aficionados as Fast's finest hour, the late-'70s Tangerine Dream-style sequencer rhythms of early Synergy are largely absent, replaced by a sound that owes more to progressive rock than to pseudo-soundtrack music. Many of the tracks here have a low-key charm, but at times Fast gets nearly symphonic in his grandeur, offering classical-sounding counterpoint and near-orchestral arrangements complete with electronic approximations of tympani. At the time of this recording, synthesizer technology was still in an early stage of development, and it's remarkable how much Fast is able to achieve using electronic instruments exclusively. As Synergy, Larry Fast composed, recorded, and released Audion on Passport Records as a cassette and vinyl LP in 1981. It had a limited release as a CD in 1986. For digital remastering in 1998, Fast used the original tapes that preceded the original release. The quality of this reissue (1998) is superb. The quality of the music is also superb. This legendary e-musician has always been on the cutting edge of technology and artistry. His soundscape is full of dense, deep, dark, and deft sequences. To assure that there are no mistaken identities, Fast adds more sequences. To give the disc its artistic integrity, he adds some synth riffs with rock & roll textures and timbres. There are no guitars. For e-music fans, this disc is essential because of its techniques and historical importance. It will appeal to fans of Dweller at the Threshold, Radio Massacre International, Kubusschnitt, Jean Michel Jarre, and Tangerine Dream. Prog rock fans will also find it important.
