"Shake some action's what I need, to let me bust out at full speed. . . ". The words of a teenage rebel, set to the most aggressive mod music this side of "My Generation"--except that, by the time San Francisco's Flamin' Groovies released the unrepentantly revivalist SHAKE SOME ACTION, their average age was 30. Moreover, they were not rebelling against the older generation, but their own peers. Fortunately, their cries did not go unheard. Although SHAKE SOME ACTION was not a mainstream hit, it was lauded by the press and became a huge influence on the punk and power-pop movements on both sides of the Atlantic.
Uncut (p.127) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[G]uitarist Cyril Jordan and new singer Chris Watson ditched the Stonesy riffs of yore for chiming Beatles melodies and Kinks nous."
Something of an American underground institution, San Francisco's the Flamin' Groovies started out in the mid 1960s as a Stones-tinged throwback to the early days of rock & roll. Although the band had its fans, they were too out of step with the Summer of Love to break through to the mainstream. Though this era would produce one of their two signature songs, "Teenage Head." By the '70s, the band switched up their sound and recast themselves as power-pop songsters. It was during this period that the Flamin Groovies would release their other beloved classic, "Shake Some Action," one of the all-time great power-pop tunes.
