Liner Note Author: Bill Dahl. Always one for wandering, American blues legend Sonny Boy Williamson (AKA Rice Miller, the second artist to use the Sonny Boy name) found himself in England during the mid-1960s performing with eager young British musicians in front of reverential audiences. U.K. BLUES features the eccentric Mississippi-born vocalist/harmonica player collaborating live with guitarist Eric Clapton and the Yardbirds on simmering tunes such as "23 Hours Too Long" and "A Lost Care." This document of Williamson's '63 tour also pairs him with the Animals, most notably on "Night Time Is the Right Time" and "Nobody But You," two swaggering tracks where Eric Burdon joins in on vocals. THE ENCORE COLLECTION includes a second disc, a compilation called BLUES HARP HEROES, which counts a previously unreleased Williamson tune (the spare, plaintive "Steady Rollin' Man") among its many fine harmonica-laden tracks.
Sometimes known as Sonny Boy Williamson II, bluesman Rice Miller took his musical moniker from another blues singer who used it first, though Miller was the best-known Sonny Boy Williamson. He began performing in the 1920s, but the Mississippi singer/harmonica player is best known for his pioneering Chicago-style work in the '50s, which influenced Chicago blues singers and harmonica players in equal measure. In the '60s, he was one of those influential blues musicians embraced by British rockers, and he recorded with the Yardbirds, the Animals, and others before his death in 1965.
