Performer: Various Artists/Tommy Guerrero
Distributor: Caroline Distribution Notes: DJ: Tommy Guerrero. Unlike several other volumes in the flaunting-your-influences series Another Late Night, skate hero and lo-fi pop recordist Tommy Guerrero has few obvious precursors to draw upon -- though a mix-album soundclash populated by JFA, Lou Barlow's Sentridoh, and Emitt Rhodes would've been an exciting proposition indeed. Apparently though, when Guerrero's chilling out he pops a lot of '70s soul into the deck. He also possesses a sense of selector obscurity that lets him avoid frequently compiled megahits like "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)" and "If You Don't Know Me By Now," preferring instead a parade of rare grooves from the Chambers Brothers, Bill Withers, the Main Ingredient, and Rufus Thomas. Guerrero wisely uses the last half to stretch out, slotting in a pair of jazz-funk nuggets from Ronnie Foster and Hampton Hawes, plus Can's groovy-in-context "Vitamin C." He also offers an exclusive recording: a gutbucket cover of the Beatles' "Come Together" that's capable of implanting the image of Booker T. and company jiving across McLemore Avenue. ~ John Bush
