Notes: Now this is an odd collection. The 16 selections, presumably drawn mostly from the Everest catalog, are all supposed to represent funk in one way or another. The music includes Cuban dance music, odd pop numbers, and bits of jazz, including random cuts from organists Wild Bill Davis and Jimmy Smith, the Woody Herman Orchestra with Tito Puente's rhythm section (how many more times will selections from that date be reissued?), and saxophonists Herbie Fields and Paul Bascomb. The personnel and recording dates are not included and the liner notes basically say nothing. Some of the performances are worthwhile although many are merely throwaways, and the amount of funk on each selection varies greatly. With better packaging and more coherent programming, this might have been a worthwhile set. But in its present form, it is only worth picking up by the curious at a budget price. ~ Scott Yanow
