Performer: MC Lyte
Producer: Craig DeGraff Distributor: WEA Strategic Marketing Notes: Audio Remasterer: Bob Fisher . Liner Note Author: John Bolsar. Pioneering female rapper MC Lyte hit the ground running with her first single, 1988's stripped-down slice of life "I Cram to Understand U," (which told the story of her doomed relationship with a crack-addicted boyfriend), and never looked back. RHYME MASTERS selects cuts from albums from her debut, 1988's LYTE AS A ROCK to 1996's BAD AS I WANNA B. Though her production smarts grow increasingly sophisticated over the years, her whip-smart rhyming skills remain as sharp and focused on her Brooklyn roots in the '90s' caustic "Druglord Superstar" as they start out in the early days of "Cram."
While there were a few female MCs before her, MC Lyte, who dropped her debut, LYTE AS A ROCK, in 1988, was one of the first female rappers to impact the movement artistically and commercially. Her brash, skillful style earned her considerable respect from the male-dominated rap community, but Lyte took dead aim at that very community's chauvinism and misogyny. Though she made a few less-than-successful attempts at crossover stardom, her standing as one of hip-hop's iconic figures has never been questioned. In addition to music, Lyte has had a solid acting career and has done considerable work in the fight against AIDS and HIV.
