Performer: Master P
Distributor: EMI Music Distribution

Notes: Personnel: Mo B. Dick (background vocals). Liner Note Author: Michael Allen Harrison. Photographer: John Ricard. THE BEST OF MASTER P skims the cream from the New Orleans rapper's prodigious, occasionally hit-or-miss catalogue. Master P is a genius as an entrepreneur--his No Limit label became a regional empire completely outside the mainstream music industry--and, while his music isn't always what one would call visionary, it's certainly unique within the gangsta rap fold. Master P and his No Limit soldiers offer raw ghetto narratives couched in the label's signature fat, frantic synth-laden beats. Of course, given the speed at which Master P churned out records, it's no surprise that his releases contain a fair deal of filler, which makes THE BEST a good place to turn for a sampler of his style. Hits like "Bout It, Bout It II" and "Make 'Em Say Ugh" are here beside chant-along jams like "Bounce Dat Azz" and slow grooves like "Mr. Ice Cream Man." With guest appearances by Mystikal, Silkk the Shocker, and Mia X, this collection also functions as a nice primer for the distinct sound of New Orleans rap.
Rivaling Sean "Puffy" Combs for the title of Most Visible Rap Mogul, rapper Master P (born Percy Miller) ran the No Limit label, was a player with the Charlotte Hornets, and put out films such as the comedy I GOT THE HOOK-UP. Responsible for exporting New Orleans-styled synth-rap (analog synth melodies, frenetic, bouncy rhythms) to the whole of the United States, Master P's No Limit label was at one point synonymous with Southern rap. Never quite topping the strength of his debut GHETTO D, Master P has been plagued with financial and legal problems since the late '90s.
