Performer: Donna Summer
Artist: Giorgio Moroder Engineer: Giorgio Moroder; Hans Menzel Producer: Pete Bellotte Distributor: Universal Distribution Notes: Personnel: Donna Summer (vocals); Nick Woodland, Pete Bellotte, Molly Moll (guitar); Franz Deuber (strings); Giorgio Moroder (keyboards, percussion); Mike Thatcher (keyboards); Dave King (bass guitar); Bernie Brocks (percussion); Madeline Bell, Sunny Leslie, Sue Glover (background vocals); Munich Machine. Packaged like a box set, this compilation from Mercury contains Love to Love You Baby, A Love Trilogy, and Four Seasons of Love -- the three albums Donna Summer released during 1975 and 1976. Produced by Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte, they're patchy but not short on innovation, featuring the charting likes of "Love to Love You Baby," "Could It Be Magic," "Spring Affair," and "Winter Melody." While it's convenient to have these three albums rounded up and made available in one shot, the packaging is as cheap as it gets. The plastic rungs are flimsy and can't hold the discs, so the discs will slip out every time the set is handled. However, the individual booklets for each album are also contained, so you could put the discs in separate jewel cases -- only you'd be missing the tray cards that would display the spines and back covers. ~ Andy Kellman
One of the most talented artists of the disco era, Donna Summer first found success by teaming with producer Giorgio Moroder and developing a highly sexualized, hooky dance sound highlighted by percolating electronics and moaning, sensual vocals. An incredible run of hit singles established Summer as a genuine 1970s icon (an image she has unfortunately found it difficult to shake), and she later expanded her sound to encompass straight R&B and pop.
