Performer: Gilles Peterson
Producer: Gilles Peterson (Compilation) Distributor: Caroline Distribution Notes: On BBC LIVE SESSIONS, radio DJ Gilles Peterson showcases an eclectic roster of live artist tracks from his Radio 1 show, including Beck's melancholy "Round the Bend" and Beth Gibbons' after-hours, Lady Day-flavored "Romance." Peterson's guest roster favors low-key soul-jazz like Roisin Murphy's "Sow Into You" or Amp Fiddler's "I'm Doin' Fine," with frequent forays into hip-hop territory like Common's "The Corner." But he also refreshingly blends experimentalists like Bjork, whose reworking of "Who Is It," from her MEDULLA album, is a highlight, and contemporary jazz, in the shape of the Heritage Orchestra's "Telescopic," into his wide-ranging mix.
British DJ and cultural arbiter Gilles Peterson is the father of acid jazz (the name derives from his dance label Acid Jazz Records) and has done much, since the 1980s, to promote eclecticism in dance music, via his all-embracing DJ sets, radio shows, and compilation albums. His explorations of Brazilian, Latin, and African music and obscure European jazz add a sophisticated and inclusive feel to the usual breakbeats and grooves, and has influenced many DJs since.
