Three years after her Grammy-nominated record, WAIT FOR ME, Massachusetts-based blues singer Susan Tedeschi returned with a new studio album, produced by Joe Henry. As always, Tedeschi applies her soulful vocals to a variety of stirring covers, including a spare take on the Rolling Stones' "You Got the Silver" and a pleading rendition of Bob Dylan's "Lord Protect My Child." Here the formidable vocalist is aided by her husband, multi-instrumentalist Derek Trucks, as well as guitarist Doyle Bramhall II (Eric Clapton) and the Blind Boys of Alabama.
Rolling Stone (No. 988, p.120) - 3 out of 5 stars - "...[F]iery interpretations of often-overlooked soul, rock, blues, folks and gospel tracks....[R]aw but exceedingly well-played...."
Down Beat (p.74) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Her confident singing voice mixes subtle dark tones with brighter shades of joy and friskiness on selections from the troves of, among others, Otis Redding, Stevie Wonder, Iris DeMent and Percy Mayfield."
Boston-born blues singer/guitarist Susan Tedeschi built up a strong grass-roots following in the '90s with her forward-looking style, which combined classic blues with soul, pop, and a dash of rock. She's as comfortable covering material by Al Green or John Prine as she is tackling a Junior Wells or Big Mama Thornton chestnut. Married to Allman Brothers Band guitarist Derek Trucks (a solo artist in his own right), she's a favorite on the jam-band circuit as well as a blues festival regular.
