Personnel: Delfeayo Marsalis, Patrick Smith . This tight, professional set of some of Charles Mingus's lesser-known compositions contains creditable versions of the bassist and bandleader's adventurous tone poem, "The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady," the sophisticated big band swing of "Dizzy Moods," and the frenetic "Meditation on Integration." While the rough edginess of the Mingus band is perhaps impossible to duplicate, the Wynton Marsalis-headed New York City jazz institution's impeccable reproductions capture the essence of these compositions' bold, innovative spirit.
JazzTimes (p.110) - "The characteristic driving riffs, engaging melodies, atmospheric moods, crashing dissonances, satirical humor, abrupt temp changes and straightahead swing are faithfully rendered."
