With their organic, live sound, laid-back jazzy grooves, and fierce intelligence, the Roots have been the kings of alternative hip-hop since they appeared on the scene in the early 1990s. HOMEGROWN! is a collection of outtakes, live recordings, remixes, BBC sessions, and other oddities that span the group's career up to the mid-2000s. Not surprisingly, given the Roots' musicianship, a great deal of the material is top-notch, and the best of it highlights the band's brilliant inventiveness as well as their unabashed love of hip-hop's rich past. In addition to the beats, drummer and band historian ?estlove provides exhaustive track-by-track liner notes.
Entertainment Weekly (p.89) - "The virtuosic jazz-inspired and soul-spiked singles of VOL. ONE are a better listening experience than any of their six albums..." -- Grade: A- Uncut (p.85) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "They've successfully maneuvered their live hip hop sound around the acid-jazz ghetto and neo-soul cliches...with straight-up head-nodders coming to the rescue." Mojo (Publisher) (p.109) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Label-bosses rarely appreciate such fearlessness and invention, but here are 30 strong reasons why The Roots remain hip hop's very own Arkestra."
Featuring an infamous human beatbox/turntable backing up three MCs, the Roots have elevated hip-hop music by using live instrumentation instead of samples. Performing in the underground hip-hop circuit since 1987, the group has made waves in both the rap and jazz scenes since their first album in 1995. In an era where hip-hop's classic elements have been swallowed in a vortex of cheap imitations, the Roots continue to redefine themselves as both musicians and storytellers, while still garnering the respect of hardcore fans and the press alike.
