Performer: Chick Corea
Engineer: Martin Wieland; Bernie Kirsh Producer: Manfred Eicher Distributor: Universal Distribution Notes: /Miroslav Vitous/Roy Haynes. Personnel: Chick Corea (piano); Miroslav Vitous (bass); Roy Haynes (drums). Recorded at Mad Hatter Studios, Los Angeles, California in November 1981. Includes liner notes by Chick Corea. Personnel: Chick Corea (piano); Miroslav Vitous (double bass); Roy Haynes (drums). Liner Note Author: Chick Corea. Recording information: Mad Hatter Studios, LA, CA (11/1981). Photographer: Michael Manoogian. Pianist Chick Corea had a reunion with bassist Miroslav Vitous and drummer Roy Haynes for this double LP, 13 years after they had recorded Now He Sings, Now He Sobs. The first half of this two-fer consists of duet and trio free improvisations and is sometimes a touch lightweight even with moments of interest; playing free was not as natural to Corea by this time as it had been in the '60s. However, the second album, seven Thelonious Monk compositions, comes across quite well as Corea does justice to the spirit of Monk without losing his own strong musical personality. ~ Scott Yanow
Uncut (5/03, p.116) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Mercurial and constantly inventive, the playing is top class throughout..."
Chick Corea took the piano in new directions following the monumental achievements of McCoy Tyner and Bill Evans. His pioneering electric piano playing with Miles Davis helped shape the sound of fusion in the late '60s. He then turned to acoustic, free-form improv with the group Circle before forming the seminal fusion band Return to Forever. Throughout his lengthy career, Corea has drawn on bebop, Latin, rock, and classical influences to make his mark as both a soloist and a composer.
