Performer: Joao Gilberto
Engineer: Dave Richards Producer: Joao Gilberto Distributor: WEA (Distributor) Notes: Solo performer: Joao Gilberto (vocals, guitar). Recorded live at the Montreaux Festival on July 18, 1985. Anyone who has heard the landmark GETZ/GILBERTO sessions knows that bossa nova icon Joao Gilberto works wonderfully with a full band. This concert album, however, recorded live at the 1985 Montreux Jazz Festival, reveals how amazing the Brazilian singer/guitarist can sound without any accompaniment. Employing only his nearly whispered vocals and delicate six-string acoustic playing, Gilberto mesmerizes an initially rowdy crowd with this set of 13 bright, breezy tunes. While he performs a few classics, namely the genre-defining songs "Garota De Ipanema" (AKA "The Girl from Ipanema") and "Aquarela Do Brasil" (AKA "Brazil"), Gilberto also offers up less-renowned material such as Caetano Veloso's gentle "Menino Do Rio" and the easy-going "Estate," which features the artist singing in Italian rather than his native Portuguese. Essential for any devoted Gilberto fan, LIVE IN MONTREUX is a remarkable example of gorgeous on-stage minimalism, and serves as an excellent companion piece to LIVE IN TOKYO, which was recorded almost 20 years later.
Joao Gilberto, along with Antonio Carlos Jobim, defined the bossa nova sound. With his whispering vocals and subtle, rhythmically complex guitar work, he was the perfect conduit for Jobim's musical message. His collaborations with his wife Astrud and U.S. saxman Stan Getz sparked a worldwide bossa nova craze in the early 1960s. Decades later, after his daughter Bebel went on to bossa nova/pop crossover success, he remains the primary interpreter of the style.
