Performer: Dave Grusin
Artist: Branford Marsalis; Omar Hakim; Harvey Mason; Marcus Miller; Carlos Rios; Don Grusin; Hugh Masekela Engineer: Don Murray; Ed Rak Producer: Dave Grusin Distributor: Universal Distribution Notes: Personnel includes: Dave Grusin (keyboards); Branford Marsalis (soprano saxophone); Hugh Masekela (flugelhorn); Carlos Rios (guitar); Marcus Miller, Abraham Laboriel (bass); Omar Hakim, Harvey Mason (drums); Mike Fisher (percussion); Don Grusin (programming). Principally recorded at Sunset Sound, Los Angeles, California; Record Plant Stage M, Hollywood, California; Clinton Recording Studios, New York, New York. On this diverse and generally interesting (if not essential) CD, keyboardist/composer Dave Grusin performs a five-song suite from his soundtrack of The Milagro Beanfield War along with selections by Harvey Mason, his brother Don Grusin, Hugh Masekela, Marcus Miller and himself. Other than the suite (which has a string section), the music is mostly played by smaller groups, with Branford Marsalis on tenor and soprano a major asset on three songs and flugelhornist Hugh Masekela taking a solo on his own "Polina." ~ Scott Yanow
A dizzyingly eclectic jazz/pop piano player, producer, and arranger, Dave Grusin has lent his skills to artists as diverse as Art Pepper, Benny Goodman, and Billy Joel, and has written music prolifically for film and television. But Grusin's biggest mark on musical history is in his role as co-founder of GRP Records, a mid-1970s start-up that provided a home to the burgeoning jazz fusion scene. Grusin nurtured the careers of Chick Corea, Lee Ritenour, Gary Burton, and many others. The GRP "sound," which Grusin was responsible for imbuing in all its releases, relied on crystal clear digital production that captured the harmonic subtleties and rock-like rhythms of jazz fusion.
