Although there have been many John Denver compilations over the years, this 2006 Legacy collection is the first to offer up a well-selected set of the folk/pop icon's plainly romantic work. Drawing from various studio albums and live performances between 1969 and '95, LOVE SONGS features many of the late singer/songwriter's most beautiful tunes, including the gentle, lilting title track from POEMS, PRAYERS AND PROMISES and his own version of the bittersweet "Leaving on a Jet Plane" (initially made famous by Peter, Paul & Mary). RCA Legacy collects some of the late John Denver's more amorous recordings on Love Songs, a 15-track overview that spans the entirety of his career. The soft rock/country-folk troubadour excelled at sentimentality, crafting works both heartbreakingly gorgeous ("Annie's Song," "Leaving on a Jet Plane") and unbearably cheesy ("Perhaps Love," "Seasons of the Heart") with equal amounts of charm and smarm. As a collection of romantic ballads, Love Songs lives up to its moniker, but as a John Denver anthology, it suffers from the exclusion of more well-known material. ~ James Christopher Monger
As John Denver, the former John Henry Deutschendorf was a ubiquitous icon of the 1970s. Although he had been a musician and songwriter in the 1960s, penning "Leaving on a Jet Plane" for Peter, Paul & Mary, Denver hit his stride in the '70s with earnest folk songs celebrating the glories of the natural world and life's simple pleasures. Although he was sometimes savaged by critics for his overarching earnestness, his songs speak for themselves, and his records still sell in large numbers. In the wake of his premature death in a 1997 plane crash, a number of contemporary artists have recorded Denver's songs, without any hint of irony.
