Notes: Whitesnake: David Coverdale (vocals); Adrian Vandenberg (guitar); Jon Lord (bass guitar); Tommy Aldridge (drums). Additional personnel: Jimmy Page (guitar). Fronted by former Deep Purple singer David Coverdale, the British hard-rock act Whitesnake released records in the late 1970s and early '80s, but the band went largely unnoticed by American audiences until '84's SLIDE IT IN and its follow-up, '87's massively successful self-titled album. This 18-track compilation draws primarily from those outings (and '89's SLIP OF THE TONGUE, which featured guitar virtuoso Steve Vai), including the stomping fan-favorite "Slow an' Easy" and the group's trio of huge hits--the romantic power ballad "Is This Love," the surging anthem "Here I Go Again," and the fierce mini-epic "In the Still of the Night." Also notable is the inclusion of "Pride and Joy," taken from Coverdale's oft-overlooked collaboration with guitarist Jimmy Page, which naturally conjures up a Led Zep vibe. For a concise, well-selected overview of Coverdale's work from '78 to '93, this DEFINITIVE COLLECTION works nicely.
Former Deep Purple vocalist David Coverdale formed the hard-rock/metal outfit Whitesnake in 1978. While the band's macho rock sound and "what's-wrong-with-being-sexy?" sexist aesthetic garnered them a respectable amount of commercial success in the U.K. and Europe, the band didn't hit big in the U.S. until the release of their 1987 self-titled album. Anchored by the fist-pumping single "Here I Go Again," the album sold millions and forever solidified Whitesnake's place in hair-metal lore.
