Notes: This triple-CD set features two bona-fide Bon Jovi classics as well as Jon Bon Jovi's 1990 solo album, BLAZE OF GLORY. The latter features guest appearances by Jeff Beck, Elton John, and Little Richard on a selection of Bon Jovi's songs inspired by the movie YOUNG GUNS II. The band's self-titled 1984 debut not only became a blueprint for its later multi-platinum releases, but a definitive work for an entire genre, while 1988's NEW JERSEY is Bon Jovi's pledge of allegiance to its home state, reeking of attitude, emotion, and the need to party. Chronicles packages together (albeit rather flimsily and very erratically) a couple of Bon Jovi releases without a hint of logic behind their selections. The first disc, Bon Jovi features two of their minor hits: "Runaway," which put the group on the map, and the pop-happy "She Don't Know Me." Then skipping over their most important works without a further thought, the rest of the disc is rounded out by New Jersey and Blaze of Glory; the latter was Jon Bon Jovi's score to Young Guns II. This could have all been trimmed of filler and put together one disc, and it still wouldn't have made for a decent greatest-hits record. Nevertheless, if you're looking to fill out your Bon Jovi collection to the hilt (and if you're a diehard who doesn't own New Jersey already? Shame on you) this will definitely help fill the gaps. ~ Rob Theakston

By 1986, Bon Jovi's brand of melodic hard rock was a runaway hit, with the band's third album, SLIPPERY WHEN WET, achieving massive international success. In addition to the catchy singles, the singer's chiseled good looks only led to more adoration and, eventually, movie and TV roles. By channeling the earnestness of his hero, Bruce Springsteen, and reining in his glammy look, Bon Jovi outlasted his hair-metal peers for decades beyond their '80s heyday.
