To listen to sound clips, you'll need the most current version of the
Performer: Various Artists
Producer: Dave Doyle; Deke Dickerson; Dennis Walker; Dick Dale; David Barker; Wakefield Dickerson; Guilty Men; Joe Louis Walker; Joel Selvin; Lou Whitney; Mark Neill; Nick Gravenites; Otis Rush; Redd Volkaert; Scott Mathews; Stephen Bruton; Bruce Bromberg Distributor: WEA (Distributor) Notes: Audio Remasterer: Bob Kinsey. A treasure trove for guitarists and guitar enthusiasts alike, this collection of wildly talented players performing in widely differing genres spans the jazzy rock of the Morells' "Popbelly," Redd Volkaert's awe-inspiring technical skills in "Breakneck," the Hot Club Of Cowtown's Django Reinhardt recreation on "Mission to Moscow," and the jump blues of Otis Rush's "Natural Ball." There is some fine guitar playing on this sampler of Hightone Records roots acts, including the Telecaster brilliance of Redd Volkaert on "Breakneck," Dave Alvin blasting (pun intended) through an extended live version of his "Long White Cadillac," the ageless Dick Dale on "Esperanza," and the roots/punk drive of the Domino Kings on "Some Kind of Sign," featuring the twin Telecasters of Steve Newman and Richie Rebuth. Also worth noting here is Chris Smither's shimmering and sparkling take on Robert Johnson's "Dust My Broom." Fun stuff. ~ Steve Leggett
