Performer: Elvis Presley
Producer: Ernst Mikael Jorgensen; Roger Semon; Ernst Mikael Jorgensen (Compilation); Roger Semon (Compilation) Distributor: BMG (distributor) Notes: Liner Note Author: Michael Hill. Recording information: 08/25/1969-02/08/1976. One of three compilations released in early 2006 to showcase the King's versatility as a singer and song stylist, this 20-track set presents many of Elvis Presley's finest forays into country music. While the release's artwork is deceptive--the photos depict a young rockabilly cat, even though the songs here were all recorded between 1969 and '76--many of the tunes are outstanding, with the King easing into a number of "countrypolitan" classics. Highlights include a wonderfully wistful rendition of Willie Nelson's "Funny How Time Slips Away" and a dreamy, echo-laden version of Fred Rose's "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain." While those looking to venture deeper into this aspect of Presley's material should seek out THE COUNTRY SIDE OF ELVIS, this collection is perfect for listeners looking to make a shorter rural detour.
"Before Elvis, there was nothing," John Lennon once said. An overstatement, of course, but Elvis Presley's ascendance to superstardom in the mid-1950s kicked off a musical and social revolution whose impact has yet to abate. After the charming young man from Tupelo, Mississippi was discovered by Sun Records honcho Sam Phillips, the wise studio owner took Presley under his wing, leading to the landmark recording of his first single, "That's All Right (Mama)." The rest, of course, is well-documented history, with Elvis going on to conquer the pop charts, the box office, and beyond. He truly was the King, and his blend of country, pop, and R&B became the cornerstone of rock & roll.
