To listen to sound clips, you'll need the most current version of the
Performer: Bobby McFerrin
Engineer: Chris Tergesen; Bernie Kirsh Distributor: EMI Music Distribution Notes: Personnel: Bobby McFerrin (vocals) and Chick Corea (piano). Recorded live at The Wolftrap and Carnegie Hall during the summer of 1990. In 1990 singer Bobby McFerrin and pianist Chick Corea teamed up for six concerts that were as much about performance art and wacky comedy as about music; to many people's surprise Corea proved to be as humorous as McFerrin. This CD features musical highlights from a pair of the concerts. Unfortunately without seeing the performers in person, one is not always sure what the audience is laughing at, particularly during the first three selections. Still there are some remarkable moments, primarily from McFerrin who shows that he can switch effortlessly from soaring falsetto to intense basslines; his ideas on "Blue Bossa" are quite impressive. Corea is heard more often as an accompanist than as an equal partner so McFerrin often steals the show on this interesting but not essential release. ~ Scott Yanow
Rolling Stone (3/5/92, p.68) - 3.5 Stars - Very Good - "..a pleasure and a challenge...Bobby McFerrin's magic at its very best.."
Down Beat (3/92, p.31) - 4 Stars - Very Good - "..both blessed with technical adroitness, eclectic musical influences, a playful - almost puckish - sense of humor...a good case study in both jazz rapport and a belief in the power of spontaneous creative combustion.."
Although he'll always be remembered for his 1988 novelty hit "Don't Worry Be Happy," Bobby McFerrin is one of the most talented musicians in pop music. Possessed of a four-octave range and astounding vocal percussion skills, McFerrin has worked with artists as diverse as Yo-Yo Ma and Herbie Hancock, as well as numerous world-renown symphony orchestras. McFerrin, like no other artist, has managed to bridge the gap between pop and classical music by illustrating that the varying artistry and techniques that mark those forms are not mutually exclusive.
