PREMIERE, as the title indicates, is the debut album by British light classical vocalist Katherine Jenkins. A technically gifted soprano who also has an unmistakable grace and lightness to her tone, Jenkins is a wonderfully expressive singer. The 14 tracks here focus on the classical side of her repertoire, although a small handful of folk and pop tunes add variety and depth. Originally released in 2003, this edition is its first U.S. issue.
While still in her mid-twenties, Welsh mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins emerged as Britain's all-time best-selling classical artist. Although she was plagued by critics' charges that her success was more a result of physical beauty than musical talent, her popularity was unassailable and her classical reinterpretations of pop recordings -- most notably Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You" - certainly did not stunt her fanbase. Born in Wales in 1980, Jenkins fell under the sway of classical music early in childhood, joining the Royal School of Church Music Cathedral Singers and serving with the National Youth Choir of Wales. In the '00s, she made the most of a mammoth (seven-figure) contract and ascended to the level of U.K. superstar.
