Artist: Ray Vega Engineer: Phil Edwards Distributor: Universal Distribution Notes: Personnel: Tito Puente (vibraphone, marimba, timbales, timablito, percussion); Bobby Porcelli (soprano, alto & baritone saxophones); Mario Rivera (soprano & tenor saxophones, piccolo, flute); Michael James Turre (baritone saxophone); Ray Vega, Ite Jerez (trumpet, flugelhorn); Sam Burtis, Jeff Cressman (trombone); Sonny Bravo (piano); Bobby Rodriguez (bass); Johnny Rodriguez, Jose "Papo" Rodriguez (bongos, percussion); Jose Madera (congas, percussion). Producers: Carl E. Jefferson, John Burk, Tito Puente. Recorded at Coast Recorders, San Francisco, California on September 20 & 21, 1993. Includes liner notes by Max Salazar. Tito Puente leads a larger band than usual on Master Timbalero, a 13-piece orchestra that includes seven horns (including trumpeter Ray Vega; Mario Rivera on tenor, soprano, and flute; and Bobby Porcelli on soprano, alto, and baritone) and four percussionists. Throughout the colorful set, Puente shows that practically any song (including the traditional Japanese melody "Sakura Sakura," Charles Mingus' "Nostalgia in Times Square," and Maurice White's "Sun Goddess") can be turned into exciting Latin jazz. A consistently stimulating and stirring effort by a true master timbalero. ~ Scott Yanow
