Notes: Fairport Convention: Sandy Denny (vocals); Richard Thompson, Simon Nicol (guitar, background vocals); Ashley Hutchings (bass); Martin Lamble (drums). Additional personnel: Dave Swarbrick (fiddle, mandolin); Ian Matthews, Marc Ellington (vocals); Trevor Lucas (triangle). German remastered edition includes two bonus tracks, "Dear Landlord", and "Ballad Of Easy Rider." The transitional album before Fairport Convention invented folk rock with Liege And Lief, on this album they stretch out on longer numbers and introduce Dave Swarbrick, who plays some particularly fine fiddle on the lengthy 'A Sailor's Life'. Richard Thompson continued to mature with 'Genesis Hall' and 'Cajun Woman'. Equally impressive is Sandy's beautiful voice on her stellar composition 'Who Knows Where Time Goes'. Dylan abounds with three songs and 'Percy's Song' is a highlight. To round it up, a UK hit single, shock horror, with Dylan's 'Si Tu Dois Partir'. Also a bold move for a little-known band was not having their name on the album sleeve.
Q (6/00, p.63) - Ranked #79 in Q's "100 Greatest British Albums" - "...Catches them inching ever further from contemporary to more traditional fare....And if you're looking for the quintessential English female voice, how about Sandy Denny?..." Uncut (5/03, p.118) - 5 stars out of 5 - "...[A] revelation, unique from its cover sleeve to its streamlining of folk roots with electric rock..."
The definitive British folk-rock band, Fairport Convention took the traditional music of England and injected it with electricity and rock energy, sparking a whole musical movement in the U.K. in the late 1960s and early '70s. The late-'60s incarnation of the band was bursting with talent, including singer Sandy Denny and guitarist Richard Thompson, both of whom went on to lauded solo careers. Even after Denny and Thompson's departures, though, Fairport never slowed down. Through numerous personnel changes, they soldiered on for decades with their singular brand of folk-rock, becoming the Grand Old Men of the genre.
