Performer: Saxon
Distributor: Caroline Distribution Notes: POWER & THE GLORY is a 1983 album by the British heavy metal band Saxon. U.K. reissue. Saxon: Biff Byford (vocals); Graham Oliver, Paul Quinn (guitar); Steve Dawson (bass guitar); Nigel Glockler (drums). After their first significant hiatus, the members of Saxon (including new drummer Nigel Glockler) returned to the studio to work on Power & the Glory, an album which sounds like it was recorded in a tin can, albeit a very large one. The title track shows some promise, but it's all downhill from there, culminating in the six-minute-plus, strangely prog-metal sounds of "The Eagle Has Landed." There is also a noticeable lyrical shift towards "dungeons and dragons" themes, though the band had the sense of retaining at least one song about bikes in "Redline." ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
Along with Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, Saxon was one of the key bands in the early-1980s scene known as the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Using the hard-rock template laid out by Deep Purple and Black Sabbath but playing a faster, louder, and more theatrically bombastic version of it, Saxon's sound would influence a plethora of metal bands--from Megadeth and Bathory to Metallica and the Darkness--for decades to come.
