Notes: Includes liner notes by Marc Almond. BOY CHILD collects early work from Scott Walker, the French influenced singer of dark-themed folk music. This anthology of 19 tracks includes the staples "It's Raining Today" and "Copenhagen." The place to start for Scott Walker originals, BOY CHILD presents 20 self-penned tunes by the U.S.-born/U.K.-based avant-pop hero. By sidestepping Walker's frequent Jacques Brel covers (which are handily collected on SINGS JACQUES BREL), this well-selected anthology features an excellent sampling of the crooner's finest compositions from 1967's SCOTT 1 to '70's TIL THE BAND COMES IN. Among the many astounding songs are the exquisitely grand "Montague Terrace (In Blue)," the gorgeously glum "It's Raining Today," and "Time Operator," a jazzy number that explores the subtler side of the performer's signature chamber-pop sound. With other compilations surveying his more accessible material with the Walker Brothers, BOY CHILD is the ideal introduction to Walker's fascinating solo work, which strongly influenced a legion of followers, including David Bowie, Morrissey, Pulp, and the Divine Comedy.
Q (9/00, p.131) - 5 stars out of 5 - "...Those only in the market for one volume should consider [this] compilation essential. A record collection without Scott Walker is like one without The Beatles, The Clash or The Smiths - incomplete." Mojo (Publisher) (8/00, p.97) - "...Resonates with the riches of the last great days of the pop narrative. The pop song rarely aspired to such literacy after this....forged in the white-hot glare of the pop process....[with] superb orchestrations....an excellent sampler..."
Noel Scott Engel, better known as Scott Walker, was born in the US, but found fame in the UK as a member of the Walker Brothers, who became teen pop idols in England in the 1960s. After the group's demise, Walker's darker, artier side eventually came to the fore, and he began a quirky solo career that encompassed Jacques Brel covers, moody, saloon-singer crooning, and avant-garde tendencies. He became the quintessential cult figure, inscrutable and highly influential, though after the '70s his works were few and far between.
