Although AC/DC achieved its greatest commercial success after the death of original vocalist Bon Scott (1980's BACK IN BLACK and 1981's FOR THOSE ABOUT TO ROCK featured replacement Brian Johnson), fans showed that they had not forgotten Scott when DIRTY DEEDS was released in the early '80s for American fans. The album skyrocketed directly to the top of the Billboard charts. Like DIRTY DEEDS, the 1984 EP, '74 JAILBREAK, features tracks previously unavailable domestically. The anthem "Jailbreak" was issued as a single early on, and proves to be the highlight of '74 JAILBREAK (a promo video was even filmed that resurfaced with the EP's release). There are a couple of other early rockers, "You Ain't Got a Hold on Me" and "Show Business," an almost-instrumental ("Soul Stripper"), and a roughed-up take on the blues standard "Baby, Please Don't Go" as well. Fans of Bon Scott-era AC/DC should check out this short-but-solid collection of nearly forgotten songs.
AC/DC is generally regarded as a titanic force in the world of heavy rock, occupying a sphere of seminal influence right alongside Kiss. These Australian guitar gods--led by Angus Young, an axe-wielding man-boy in a school uniform--churn out songs laced with sexual double entendre and heavy riffs. Since the mid-1970s, Angus and his brother, Malcolm, have survived a stormy band history, including the death of original singer/wildman Bon Scott, all the while bashing out their simplistic, yet highly addictive, brand of bluesy riff-rock.
