Unforgettable: The Standards Collection

Notes: The songs on this collection of standards may be unforgettable, but unfortunately many of the versions here aren't. There are a few exceptions. Madeleine Peyroux gives "Careless Love" a refreshingly jaunty feel. Merle Haggard turns in a jazzy, fiddle-led take on "As Time Goes By." Al Green, who tackles "You Are So Beautiful," could sing a wash-and-wear label and make it memorable. Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's fusing of "Over the Rainbow" and "What a Wonderful World" is already a classic recording in its own right, thanks in part to it showing up on another new movie soundtrack every month or so. But most of what is here is just here, without being particularly unforgettable. Another exception, although of a different sort, would be Peter Cincotti's version of "Rainbow Connection," which violates the unsaid rule that this song should only ever be sung by green frogs. It's memorable, certainly, but that's not always a good thing. ~ Steve Leggett
