Performer: Naughty by Nature
Distributor: WEA Strategic Marketing Notes: Naughty by Nature: Treach (rap vocals); Vinnie. HIP-HOP HITS is a budget compilation on Flashback records that collects 10 tracks by the 1990s crossover rap stars and kings of the summer jam Naughty By Nature. Though the group's second biggest hit "Hip Hop Hooray" is conspicuously absent, "O.P.P.," NBN's signature anthem, is front and center. The track overflows with the group's most appealing qualities: familiar, accessible loops ("O.P.P." borrows a Jackson 5 sample), anthemic, singalong choruses, and Treach and Vinnie's nimble, dancehall-informed flows. These qualities also come through loud and clear on "Everyday All Day," "Clap Yo Hands," and the unfairly forgotten hit "Feel Me Flow".
Proteges of Queen Latifah, the New Jersey rap trio Naughty By Nature ruled the air waves for a large part of the early 1990s, thanks to a string of undeniable hip-hop anthems--including "Hip Hop Hooray," "Feel Me Flow," and the infidelity ode "O.P.P."--that mixed a hardcore sensibility with mainstream pop accessibility. Although they continued to release strong material, the group's success began to wane by the late '90s, and the individual members began pursuing other projects. Nonetheless, Naughty By Nature's key singles remain indisputable classics.
