Performer: Flogging Molly
Distributor: Alternative Dis. Alliance Notes: Flogging Molly: Dave King (vocals, guitars); Ted Hutt (guitar); Toby McCallum (mandolin); Bridget Regan (fiddle); Jeff Peters (electric bass); George Schwindt (drums). Recorded in 1997 in the band's hometown of Los Angeles, ALIVE BEHIND THE GREEN DOOR captures the Irish-folk-punk band Flogging Molly at their fiery, passionate best. The band themselves admit to being uncomfortable in the studio, preferring the intensity and spontaneity of live performance as the true representation of the group's rollicking energy. This engaging live set is a case in point. The amped-up jig of "Swagger" kicks off the proceedings, and crowd favorites "Laura" and "Lilah" are given fine readings. The crowd noise and audience participation will help listeners feel like they're actually there, and while the sound quality on ALIVE may not be up to the standards of some audiophiles, the trade-off is worth it given the band's full-throttle performance.
Kerrang (Magazine) (p.64) - "[A] raw, ramshackle affair...The whole thing brims over with a surfeit of energy and drunken bonhomie."
Flogging Molly provide something of a West Coast answer to Boston's the Dropkick Murphys (minus the street-tough posturing). Since forming in the late 1990s, Flogging Molly have been blending punk tempos and attitude with traditional Celtic instrumentation. With their rousing choruses and bittersweet tales of drunken nights, heartache, and the perseverance of the common man, another group of Emerald Isle revelers the Mollys readily evoke is the grandaddies of Celtic punk themselves, the Pogues.
