To listen to sound clips, you'll need the most current version of the
Performer: Bad Brains
Engineer: Phil Burnett Producer: Ron St. Germain Distributor: E1 Distribution (USA) Notes: Bad Brains: H.R. (vocals); Dr. Know (guitar); Darryl (bass); Earl (drums). Recorded at Long View Farm, Worcester, Massachusetts. Personnel: H.R. (vocals); Dr. Know (guitar); Earl Hudson, Earl (drums). Audio Mixer: Patch. Recording information: Long View Fram, Worcester, MA. Photographer: Marcia Resnick. Some people just don't 'get' Bad Brains. To be fair, their early recordings can be intimidating, and it is only when you familiarize yourself with the musical dialectics of tracks such as 'Pay To Cum' that you can really appreciate their kinetic aesthetic. Abandoning the speed-freak punk cum dub reggae crossover of old, Bad Brains now employed funk and conventional rock stylings. What they lost in 'edge' they more than compensated for in power, allowing temperamental vocalist H.R. to make the most of his famously elastic vocal range over the album's 31 minutes. The exception was 'Sacred Love', where H.R.'s vocals were phoned in from jail during recording sessions after being busted for marijuana possession.
Alternative Press (7/95, pp.77-78) - Ranked #9 in AP's list of the 'Top 99 Of '85-'95' - "...I AGAINST I could be a Bad Brains Greatest Hits package: 'Re-Ignition,' 'She's Calling You,' 'Return To Heaven,' and 'Sacred Love' put all of their influences to use, from H.R.'s soulful vocals to Dr. Know's driving guitar riffs....Once you've heard it, you'll be forced not to forget..."
Formed in 1977, the Bad Brains remain one of the most important and influential hardcore bands of all time. By combining their Rastafarian beliefs and lifestyle with hardcore punk, the quartet forged a whole new (and infinitely copied) style that also touched on metal, funk, and, of course, reggae.
