Performer: Bad Brains

Additional personnel: Ron St. Germain, Ray "Chinna" Shim, Dave "Famine" Hahn, John "Squidly" Joseph, Chuck Treece (vocals); Mackie (drums). Recorded at Media Sound, R.P.M. and Souns On Sound, New York, New York; Quantum Sound, Jersey City, New Jersey. After the tour wrapped up for their 1986 release I AGAINST I, the Bad Brains succumbed to one of the many break-ups of their lengthy, on-again/off-again career. When they reunited by the late-'80s and signed to the independent Caroline label, many wondered if H.R.& company could recapture their past glories. As it turns out, the break didn't dull the quartet's energy in the slightest, as their metallic-punk classic QUICKNESS makes clear. As with most Bad Brains albums, the opening track, "Soul Craft," is a vicious one, soon followed by such other similar hard-edged romps as "Voyage into Infinity," "With the Quickness," and "Silent Tears." As with past releases, the band dips into more melodic territory ("Yout' Juice") and reggae ("The Prophet's Eye") with ease.
Formed in 1977, the Bad Brains remain one of the most important and influential hardcore bands of all time. By combining their Rastafarian beliefs and lifestyle with hardcore punk, the quartet forged a whole new (and infinitely copied) style that also touched on metal, funk, and, of course, reggae.
