Notes: This 1991 reissue of ROCK FOR LIGHT contains three tracks that weren't on the original LP. Bad Brains: H.R. (vocals); Dr. Know (guitar, piano, organ, background vocals); Darryl (synthesizer, bass, percussion, background vocals); Earl Hudson (drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel: Dave Id (background vocals). Digitally remastered by George Marino (Sterling Sound, New York, New York). Personnel: Dr. Know (piano, organ, background vocals); Darryl (synthesizer, percussion, background vocals); Earl (drums, percussion, background vocals). Recording information: Synchro Sound Studios, Boston, MA. Unknown Contributor Role: H.R. In the early-'80s, the Bad Brains recorded many of the same songs at several different sessions, resulting in such releases as 1982's BAD BRAINS and ROCK FOR LIGHT, 1996's BLACK DOTS, and 1997's OMEGA SESSIONS. ROCK FOR LIGHT is made up of songs produced by Cars leader Ric Ocasek, but unlike the sound of his slick, chart-topping new-wave band, Ocasek wisely kept the production on ROCK FOR LIGHT raw and in-your-face. While such hardcore classics as "Attitude," "Right Brigade," "Banned in D.C.," "Supertouch," "I," "Coptic Times," "Sailin' On," and "At the Movies" would be included as different versions on the aforementioned collections, ROCK FOR LIGHT features rare studio takes of such favorites as "I and I Survive," "The Meek," and the title track.
Melody Maker (7/1/95, p.39) - "...one of the greatest albums ever made. Switching from blunted dub reggae to the most shattering speedpunk ever committed to plastic...it's an album anyone interested in the outer limits of rock absolutely must own, an eighties FUNHOUSE, an unsurpassed inspiration to everyone that heard it from Albini to Mackaye to Yauch to Rollins..." Mojo (Publisher) (3/03, p.76) - Ranked #44 in Mojo's "Top 50 Punk Albums" - "...An American classic punk....Feel the rush of this seismic hardcore. A peak of exhilaration and precision..."
Formed in 1977, the Bad Brains remain one of the most important and influential hardcore bands of all time. By combining their Rastafarian beliefs and lifestyle with hardcore punk, the quartet forged a whole new (and infinitely copied) style that also touched on metal, funk, and, of course, reggae.
