Performer: Joan Baez
Artist: Bob Dylan; Kris Kristofferson; Odetta; Judy Collins; Jerry Garcia; Donovan Distributor: Welk Notes: Personnel includes: Joan Baez (vocals, guitar); Bob Dylan, Kris Kristofferson, Odetta, Judy Collins, Jerry Garcia, Jim McPherson, Jeffrey Shurtleff, Donovan, Bob Gibson. Available on 3 CDs or 4 cassettes. Spanning three discs, the box set Rare, Live & Classic is an odd mix of Joan Baez's best-known songs and rarities. For the hardcore collector, there are plenty of interesting items here, including previously unreleased duets with Bob Dylan, Donovan, Bill Wood, and Jeffrey Shurtleff, but for the casual fan, there's too much material; they would be better off with her original albums or single-disc compilations. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Rolling Stone (2/10/94, p.43) - 5 Stars - Classic - "...RARE, LIVE AND CLASSIC is that rarest of retrospectives: a coherent overview of a restless talent...."
Entertainment Weekly (12/3/93, p.72) - "...the model of a well-constructed box....The nobility of her voice is apparent whether she's singing songs by Dylan or odes to wayward sailors and Joe Hill....Dylan collectors should check out the three previously unavaiable duets with the bard..."
- Rating: B-
New York Times (Publisher) (11/28/93) - "...Ms. Baez's effect on three decades of audiences remains heartwarming..."
Joan Baez, one of the most influential folk singers of her generation, is possessed of an incredibly pure, clear and beautiful voice that has enabled her to sing music by a wide array of composers. Also known as a political activist, she was a very vocal opponent of America's involvement in the Vietnam War, and popularized several classic protest songs. In addition, she was instrumental in bringing several other artists to national attention, most importantly Bob Dylan, with whom she had a much written-about personal relationship.
