Distributor: RED Distribution Notes: Producers include: Dr. Dre, Yella, Dr. Jam, Tony G., Above The Law. Compilation producer: L.T. Hutton. Ruthless Records celebrates ten years of giving parents nightmares and pays tribute to their founder, Eazy-E, who died of AIDS in 1995, with DECADE OF GAME. Bursting on the scene in 1988 with STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON, Eazy-E and his group, N.W.A. shocked listeners with their brand of harsh, reality-based rap, known as Gangsta Rap. Other acts soon followed in his footsteps, releasing records that alternately frightened and angered parents, the police and Middle America in general. The anger and frustration of urban life is eloquently (and sometimes graphically) expressed on this compilation by Above The Law, The D.O.C. and H.W.A. (the female counterpart to N.W.A.). But Eazy-E and N.W.A. were always the force driving the scene, even after they stopped recording together. MC Ren and Ice Cube went on to successful recording and producing careers and Dr. Dre co-founded Death Row Records, introducing the world to Snoop Doggy Dogg. Although the influence of Gangsta Rap waned a bit in the aftermath of the East coast-West coast rivalry that culminated in the deaths of 2Pac and the B.I.G., the face of hip hop was forever changed by the little man from Compton with a big dream.
