Its samples successfully incorporate dub, soul, funk, jazz, and gospel elements into the musical anthropology of the hip-hop era. The rhythms are steady and the grooves fresh and organic; the lyrics are purposefully introspective and delve into both social and musical approaches to understanding the hip-hop phenomenon. Perhaps the most sophisticated of KRS-One's early efforts, GHETTO MUSIC attests to the potential that lies within rap music as a form of expression, a potential that's often obscured by banal R&B settings and gangsta posturing. Perhaps it's time for another look at the roots of rap, to get an intelligent perspective on Boogie Down Productions' ever-fresh output and enlightening take on the hip-hop culture. Pick up GHETTO MUSIC and get back in touch.
Bronx, New York-based rap duo Boogie Down Productions (Scott La Rock and KRS-1) actively suggested that young blacks were entitled to use "any means necessary" in order to overcome years of prejudice and discrimination. Their debut album, CRIMINAL MINDED, in 1987 sold over 500,000 copies and was instrumental in kick-starting the gangsta rap movement. After La Rock became the victim of an unknown assassin, KRS-1's lyrics enforced an even stronger need for a change in attitude, demanding an end to violence. The outfit's national name grew until their demise in 1992. Philosopher MC KRS-1 would go on to a decent solo career; however, his greatest claim to fame is as hip-hop's main archivist.
