Notes: We can argue all we like over these "guitar rock classics" all we want, as to whether some of them really showcase the '70s style electric guitar, on this uber-budget Rhino Flashback compilation, but the fact remains that these cuts all represent the '70s well. Sure, "Bang a Gong (Get It On)," by T. Rex may not have had any hot solos in it, but who would dispute its signature guitar riff as instantly recognizable? Likewise, one cannot debate the wild slide guitar work in Foghat's "Slow Ride," or the Southern rock fury in Ricky Medlocke's "Train, Train" with Blackfoot. That said, we also need to make plenty of room for "Smokin' in the Boy's Room," where the late, great Cub Koda (full disclosure: when he was alive he was a frequent contributor here) and his Brownsville Station's snotty ass sludge that passed for the real garage rock side of the decade. This is cheap, and it's a hip little slab of killer cuts. Yeah, Black Oak Arkansas included. ~ Thom Jurek
