Notes: 2 LPs on 1 CD. Originally released in the UK in 1977 as the Sound of Bread and as ^Anthology) in the United States, this is a solid collection for these soft rock giants of the early '70s. Contained within are all of their hits, plus some delectable gems unknown to those familiar with Bread only from the radio. This set begins with "Make It With You," which hit the number one spot in 1970, and ends with the group's last Top Ten hit, "Lost Without Your Love" from their reunion album of 1977. Other Top Ten hits include "If," "Baby I'm-a Want You," "Everything I Own," "It Don't Matter to Me," and "Guitar Man," which reached number 11. The popular songs have held up well, but perhaps the most interesting cuts here are the lesser-known ones, like "Dismal Day," "Down on My Knees," and "The Last Time." David Gates and company had quite a run, and this anthology shows why. ~ Jim Newsom Fine though most of its albums were--start with ON THE WATERS or MANNA for further exploration--Bread was first and foremost a singles band. From the time its second album scored the Top Ten hit "Make it With You," David Gates and company ruled the AM soft rock airwaves of the '70s with their folky, gentle love songs. While rock fans of a certain stripe seem to feel this kind of music is pure evil, most people of a certain age not only don't lunge for the radio dial when "Baby I'm-A Want You," "Everything I Own" or "If" come on; they secretly kinda dig them. Gates was a talented songsmith, having written hits for the Monkees, among others, and even the weakest tracks here are skillfully created. Heavy on the singles, this 20-song compilation includes the band's best album tracks, too.
The kings of 1970s soft rock, Bread was led by singer/songwriters David Gates and James Griffin. The band's mellow, highly melodic style made it a mainstay on the Top 40 and AM radio throughout the decade, with huge hits such as "If" and "Baby, I'm A-Want You." Bread split in the late 1970s, with Gates and Griffin pursuing solo careers. Gates had a solo smash with the title song for the hit film THE GOODBYE GIRL, and Griffin found success in the country-music field with the Remingtons. Any hopes of a Bread reunion were dashed when Griffin died of cancer in January 2005.
