Notes: Sony Music Special Products' The Best of Country Music has such a ludicrously broad title that it should not, by any means, be taken seriously, as if it were truly the "best" of country music. It should instead be thought of as a sampler of highlights from the Columbia and Epic vaults, leaning toward '70s country-pop and honky tonk. There are a few older cuts, such as Tammy Wynette's "Stand by Your Man" and Marty Robbins' "El Paso City," but they're outweighed by such '70s staples as Willie Nelson's "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain," Lynn Anderson's "Rose Garden," Tanya Tucker's "Delta Dawn," Johnny Paycheck's "Take This Job and Shove It," Moe Bandy's "It's a Cheating Situation," and Charlie Rich's "Behind Closed Doors," which is neither here nor there, since that lineup provides enough thrills to justify its budget price. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
