Performer: Whodini
Artist: Millie Jackson; Trey Lorenz
Producer: Darren Salmieri (Compilation)
Distributor: BMG (distributor)

Notes: Whodini: Grandmaster D, Ecstacy, Jalil Hutchins. Additional personnel: Millie Jackson, Trey Lorenz. Nearly identical to 1990's Greatest Hits and 1995's The Jive Collection, Funky Beat: The Best of Whodini contains all but one of Whodini's charting singles (including "One Love," "Friends," "Funky Beat," "Freaks Come Out at Night," "Five Minutes of Funk," and "Magic's Wand") and a couple better-known -- and radio-unfriendly, lyrically -- album cuts ("I'm a Ho," "Judy"). Any hip-hop fan who came of age after the '80s is likely to think of all this as very primitive and inextricably linked to its era, but he or she will certainly find out that Whodini were one of the primary groups to set the precedent for the fusion of hip-hop and R&B that would begin to dominate radio during the early '90s. ~ Andy Kellman
IN 1982, Whodini--Jalil Hutchins (aka Jalil), John Fletcher (aka Ecstasy), and Drew Carter (DJ Grandmaster Dee)-- emerged out of Brooklyn, with management help from Russell Simmons and production assistance from Thomas Dolby, for their self-titled debut on Jive Records. Over the next four years, three albums, and smash party tracks such as "Magic's Wand," "Friends" (later sampled by Nas in "If I Ruled The World"), and "Freaks Come Out At Night," helped cement the group's place in the early history of hip-hop. Despite being signed by former dancer Jermaine Dupri for a comeback album in 1996, the group had trouble continuing their signature good-time sound, though Whodini were acknowledged in 2007 at VH1's Hip-Hip Honors.
