Dahm Producer: George Goldner Distributor: Universal Distribution Notes: Personnel: Eddie Palmieri (piano); Bob Bianco (vocals, guitar); Armando "Chocolate" Armenteros (trumpet); Julien Priester, Jose Rodriguez, Mark Weinstein, Lewis Kahn (trombone); David Hersher, Lawrence Evans (bass guitar); Robert Thomas (drums); Chano Pozo (conga drum, bongos); Francisco Aguabella (conga drum); Manny Oquendo (bongos); Roberto Franquiz (claves); Nicky Marrero (timbales); Arturo Campa, Elliot Romero, Carlos Manuel "Cato" Daz, Jimmy Sabater, Justo Betancourt (background vocals). Any album purporting to address social justice ought to say something, or at least have powerful feeling. Unfortunately, the vocal "Everything is Everything" winds up as wasted potential, empty frustration, as if Palmieri suffered writer's block before coming up with the masterpiece Harlem River Drive. The more instrumental pieces similarly fail to shine, despite the always impressive cast of players and singers. Nothing bombs, but nothing clicks. Though interesting as the precedent to a soul-jazz classic, Justicia is only average for an Eddie Palmieri record, which is still heads above most, and probably essential listening. ~ Tony Wilds
Born into a musical family in East Harlem, New York, Latin jazz pianist par excellence Eddie Palmieri grew up in a melting pot of Latin music styles. He has recorded extensively since his first groups became active in the 1960s; jazz influences began to appear in his work in the mid-'60s. He explored a compelling mix of Latin percussion, electronics, and jazz in the '70s, making him a seminal figure of this distinctive soul fusion.
