While this budget-line release isn't the best way to collect Ella Fitzgerald's seasonal recordings -- an original LP like 1960's Ella Wishes You a Swinging Christmas is much more effective -- there's no questioning the magnificence of her renditions of holiday classics like "O Holy Night," "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" and "The First Noel," all essential regardless of format. ~ Marvin Jolly Christmas with Nat and Ella is considerably more of a mixed bag than its title suggests -- not only does the collection feature tracks from Cole and Fitzgerald, it also includes performances by Lou Rawls ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town") and Nancy Wilson ("That's What I Want for Christmas"). Consumers would be much better off picking up a solo collection from any of the aforementioned over this jumble. ~ Marvin Jolly
